MBA after Bsc Biotechnology, is it a good option?

Postby Helpseeker » Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:13 am

Is MBA after BSc Biotechnology a good choice, regarding the fact that there are only a few BT companies in the country, what would be the career prospect, scope and pay? would it be a wise decision to turn into management after a pure science background? please answer

Hi Anitha

Actually it all depends on your interest whether you want to work in a pure science background or you want to switch over to management. Money wise management give faster returns in minimum time span.

After MBA you will get job offers mostly based on your MBA degree. As for example if you did MBA in finance then you will get job offers mostly from financial firms. They will just check your knowledge of financial related topics and if you are up to the mark then you have chances of getting the job. In MBA like Agricultural business management candidate with bio background are preferred, but in all other traditional management fields preference is given only to your Pg degree. Pay package depends mainly on the reputation of Management College. MBA from any decent college can fetch you near about 5-6 lakhs per annum.

Hi Vishakha

Most of the Biotechnology students are facing the same problem today. Everyone says no new area of science and technology holds greater promise than Biotechnology. It is true, but only for minority of students who are either very good or excellent in academics. Those students are mostly employed in R & D of biotech firms, and are usually from top research institutes. All other students work in areas like quality control, production or in the marketing department of Pharma/Bio-analytical instrument manufacturing company. So if you want to work in R& D department of any good biotech company, at decent position then PhD is strongly recommended and that too from a reputed institute.
In India we have many good institutes for both M.Sc and MBA.

Some of the good M.Sc colleges are:

1. Tata Institute of Fundamental Research
2. Madhurai Kamraj University, Madurai
3. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore
4. JNU, Delhi
5. NBRC, Gurgaon
6. Indian Institute of Technology
7. AIIMS,Delhi
8. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
9. University of Hyderabad
10. PGI, Chandigarh
11. Devi Ahilya University, Indore
12. National Institute of Virology, Pune

Some of the good MBA colleges are:

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad http://www.iimahd.ernet.in

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore http://www.iimb.ernet.in

Indian Institute of Management Kolkata http://www.iimcal.ac.in

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode http://www.iimk.ac.in

Indian Institute of Management Indore http://www.iimidr.ac.in

Indian Institute of Management Lucknow http://www.iiml.ac.in

Xavier Labour Research Institute (XLRI) Jamshedpur http://www.xlri.edu

Xavier Institute of Management Bhubaneshwar http://www.ximb.ac.in

Tata Institute of Social Sciences Mumbai http://www.tiss.edu

Indian School of Business Hyderabad http://www.isb.edu

Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University New Delhi http://www.fms.edu

Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies Mumbai http://www.jbims.edu

Indian Institute of Technology department of Management Studies New Delhi http://www.iitdmba.org

Indian Institute of Technology - Vinod gupta school of Management Kharagpur http://www.som.iitkgp.ernet.in

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management Pune http://www.sibm.edu

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade New Delhi http://www.iift.edu

So if you have love for the subject than only do M.Sc otherwise goes for MBA, because placement wise MBA is far better than M.Sc.

Hi Vishakha

Actually choosing a right career is a very difficult task. Sometimes we think that this is a good option and we follow that path. After taking few steps we come to know that this is not the best thing, which again creates confusion.

First make up your mind what you want to do. M.B.B.S is a good option, but admission in M.B.B.S is a bit difficult. You can try for it and if you got selected then it is the best thing for you. If by any chance you are not able to clear the pmt exam then again you will be in dilemma. So, for that case I would suggest one thing. Make a list of courses (like MBA/M.Sc) according to your priority. In this list first place is for M.B.B.S and then put other courses for second and third place respectively. While pursuing B.Sc you can prepare for M.B.B.S, give your 100% in exam. Then wait for the results. If you are selected then everything is fine, if not then try for the second course which is in your priority list.

Keep faith in yourself, go that way where you think you can do best for yourself and which fulfils all your dreams.

Hi Neha,

In the interview, an interviewer always wants to know how capable you are and how much you deserve the offer of a place in the course. So, show him your academic capabilities and desire to be on the course.

If you are not interested in R & D there is no need of worry, but give him good reasons why you don’t want to go in research. You can say, research interests me but business aspects of Biotechnology (Pharmaceutical) fascinate me more. Therefore, you want to become Biotechnology Business manager of the future by doing this MBA course.

If you have any doubts do contact me again.
